You have found a supplier. The price is right. Then they ask: "Do you need CE certification? What about FCC?" And suddenly you are lost in a maze of acronyms that could cost you thousands — or get your shipment seized at customs.

After two decades of shipping products from China to every major market, here is the no-nonsense guide to product certifications.

CE Marking — European Union

CE stands for "Conformité Européenne" — European Conformity. It is mandatory for products sold in the EU and European Economic Area. Think of it as a passport: without CE marking, your product cannot legally enter Europe.

What products need CE? Electronics, toys, machinery, medical devices, construction products, personal protective equipment, and many more. If it plugs in, has a battery, or could affect safety, it probably needs CE.

What it actually tests: Safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and environmental requirements. A CE-certified product has passed lab testing and the manufacturer has signed a Declaration of Conformity.

Cost: $200-2,000 depending on product complexity. Electronics typically $500-1,000 for full CE testing at a Chinese lab.

Critical tip: Many Chinese suppliers offer "CE included" but what they mean is they have a generic CE certificate — not one specific to your product. Always ask for the test report, not just the certificate. We have seen fake CE documents many times.

FCC — United States

FCC stands for Federal Communications Commission. It applies to any electronic device that emits radio frequency energy — which is almost every electronic product.

What products need FCC? Anything with WiFi, Bluetooth, cellular, or any circuit board. Even a simple LED lamp technically needs FCC verification because all circuits emit some RF.

What it actually tests: That your product does not interfere with other electronic devices and operates within allowed frequency bands.

Cost: $300-1,500 for testing at an accredited lab. FCC SDOC (Supplier is Declaration of Conformity) is simpler and cheaper for non-radio products. FCC ID certification (for intentional radiators like Bluetooth devices) is more expensive.

Critical tip: FCC fines are no joke — up to $147,000 per violation. Do not skip this. We require FCC reports for every electronic product we ship to the US.

RoHS — European Union (and increasingly global)

RoHS stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. It limits the use of 10 hazardous materials in electronic and electrical products: lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and certain flame retardants.

What products need RoHS? All electronic and electrical products sold in the EU. Many other countries now have their own versions (China RoHS, Korea RoHS, UAE RoHS).

Cost: $100-500 for materials testing at a lab.

Critical tip: RoHS compliance starts with raw materials. If your factory uses cheap solder with lead, no amount of paperwork fixes that. We verify RoHS compliance at the factory level, not just on paper.

Other Certifications You Might Need

  • FDA (US Food & Drug Administration): Required for food, cosmetics, medical devices, and anything that touches food (kitchenware, food packaging).
  • UL / ETL (US/Canada): Safety certification for electrical products. Often required by retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Home Depot.
  • CCC (China Compulsory Certification): Required for products sold in China. If you are only exporting, you typically do not need CCC.
  • REACH (EU): Chemical safety regulation. Applies to all products containing chemicals, which means most manufactured goods. Registration costs can reach €10,000+.
  • UKCA (United Kingdom): The post-Brexit replacement for CE in the UK market. Currently still accepts CE, but this will change.

How We Handle Certifications

We do not just ask factories for certificates — we verify them. We work with accredited testing labs in Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Before your goods ship, we ensure every required certification is in place with valid test reports. Customs in your country will not accept a piece of paper — they want verifiable documentation.
