You find the perfect product on Alibaba. You message the supplier. They reply: 'MOQ: 1000 pieces.' You only need 100. Now what?

MOQ โ€” Minimum Order Quantity โ€” is the #1 frustration for new importers. Let's break down what it really means and how to work around it.

Why Factories Set MOQs

Chinese factories run on thin margins โ€” typically 3-8%. They make money on volume. Setting up a production line costs the same whether they make 100 units or 1,000. Raw materials are bought in bulk. Workers need to be trained on a new product.

A factory's MOQ isn't arbitrary โ€” it's the minimum order where they don't lose money. Understanding this is the key to negotiating.

Typical MOQs by Product Type

Electronics and custom-designed products: 500-2,000 units. Generic items like socks or phone cases: 100-500 units. Furniture and large items: 50-200 units. Custom packaging adds to the MOQ because the factory needs to order boxes and prints.

How to Negotiate a Lower MOQ

1. Offer a higher unit price. If they make $0.50/unit on a 1,000-piece order, offer $0.75/unit on 200 pieces. The factory makes the same profit on less work.

2. Pay for tooling/setup separately. Offer to cover the mold fee or setup cost ($100-$500). This removes their risk, and they'll often accept a lower MOQ.

3. Buy stock/ready-made products. If a factory already produces the item for another client, ask if you can buy from existing stock. No setup = lower MOQ.

4. Use a sourcing agent. We negotiate MOQs every day. Factories give us better terms because we bring them repeat business. We've negotiated 1,000-piece MOQs down to 200 pieces just by having the right relationship.

5. Combine orders. If you need 100 units of 3 different products from the same factory, they might treat it as a 300-unit order. Always ask.

What Never Works

Don't lie about future order volumes. 'I'll order 10,000 next time' is the oldest line โ€” factories have heard it a thousand times. Don't be aggressive or demanding. Chinese business culture values relationships. Polite, respectful negotiation gets much better results.
