New importers often assume "China" is one big factory. In reality, different cities specialize in entirely different products and industries. Go to the wrong city and you will pay higher prices, find lower quality, or waste weeks looking for products that are not made there.

After 20 years based in Guangzhou β€” with regular trips to Yiwu and Shenzhen β€” here is the honest comparison.

Guangzhou β€” The Trade Capital

Guangzhou has been China is trading hub for over 2,000 years. It hosts the Canton Fair β€” the world is largest trade fair β€” twice a year. This is where serious importers come.

Best for: Consumer goods, fashion and textiles, leather goods, home dΓ©cor, furniture, lighting, kitchenware, building materials, and general merchandise. Also the center of the Pearl River Delta manufacturing cluster.

Advantages: Massive wholesale markets (hundreds of them), the Canton Fair brings suppliers from all over China, excellent logistics infrastructure with one of China is largest ports (Nansha), and we are based here β€” which means you have boots on the ground.

Disadvantages: Not the cheapest for small commodity items (that is Yiwu). Wholesale markets are spread across the city β€” you need a local guide or you will spend days in traffic.

Key markets to know: Baima Clothing Market, Zhanxi Leather Market, Zhongda Fabric Market (world is largest textile market), Jinhan Exhibition Hall, and the Canton Fair Complex in Pazhou.

Who should use Guangzhou: Buyers looking for quality consumer goods, private label products, custom manufacturing, and medium-to-large orders. If you want to build a brand, start in Guangzhou.

Yiwu β€” The Small Commodity Capital

Yiwu is home to the world is largest small commodity market: Futian Market, with over 75,000 booths across 4 million square meters. If it fits in the palm of your hand and costs under $1, it is probably in Yiwu.

Best for: Small commodities, toys, accessories, stationery, hardware, artificial flowers, Christmas decorations, party supplies, socks, and basically any small, cheap consumer item.

Advantages: Unbeatable prices on small items, the largest selection of small commodities in the world, low MOQs (many booths sell by the piece), and one-stop shopping β€” everything under one roof.

Disadvantages: Quality is inconsistent. Many booths are traders, not factories β€” prices include a middleman markup. Not ideal for custom products or large orders. The city is 2 hours from any major airport (Hangzhou or Shanghai).

Who should use Yiwu: Dollar store buyers, market stall owners, small online sellers, and anyone buying small generic items where price matters more than brand quality. Yiwu is about volume and low price β€” not premium quality.

Shenzhen β€” The Tech Hub

Shenzhen transformed from a fishing village to China is Silicon Valley in 40 years. If your product has a circuit board, it is probably made in Shenzhen.

Best for: Electronics (consumer, industrial, components), smartphones and accessories, IoT devices, drones, smart home products, wearables, and PCB manufacturing.

Advantages: World is most complete electronics supply chain β€” you can source every component within 50km. Huaqiangbei Market is the largest electronics market globally. Incredible speed β€” prototypes in days, not weeks. Engineering talent is unmatched.

Disadvantages: Higher minimum orders for custom electronics (MOQs often 1,000+). Quality varies dramatically β€” counterfeits sit next to genuine components on the same shelf. IP protection is weak. You absolutely need QC here; we inspect every electronics shipment.

Who should use Shenzhen: Tech startups, electronics brands, IoT companies, and anyone developing a product with electronics. If you are making a gadget, go to Shenzhen β€” but bring someone who knows the market.
