We've helped hundreds of first-time importers. The same mistakes come up again and again. Here are the top 5 — and exactly how to avoid them.

Mistake 1: Choosing the Cheapest Quote

The cheapest factory almost always cuts corners. Materials, labor, quality — something gives. Get at least 3 quotes. If one is significantly cheaper, ask why. Walk away if the answer isn't convincing.

Mistake 2: Skipping the Factory Visit

Photos lie. Websites lie. Videos can be stolen. If you can't visit personally, hire an agent who will. We visit every factory before our clients place orders. We've caught trading companies posing as factories dozens of times.

Mistake 3: No Written Specifications

"Make it like the sample but better" is not a specification. You need exact materials, dimensions, tolerances, colors (Pantone codes), packaging requirements, and accepted defect rates. Put it in writing. Both sides sign.

Mistake 4: Paying 100% Upfront

Never. Standard terms: 30% deposit, 70% before shipment — AFTER inspection. If a factory demands 100% upfront, find another factory.

Mistake 5: Ignoring Shipping Costs

The product price is half the story. Sea freight, customs duties, port charges, inland transport, insurance — it adds up fast. Get a full landed cost estimate before committing to an order.
